On October 12th, Oak Haven lead pastor Andy Kumpel announced he has been nominated to be the Regional President of our denomination, Converge North Central. This is bittersweet because Andy has made a powerful impact on our church over the last 10 years, but we are proud and excited about how God is going to expand that impact the now 250 congregations that he will be overseeing.
As we walk through the transition of our Lead Pastor, we are trusting God to guide us every step of the way. This is a time of prayer, unity, and hope as we seek the person God is calling to lead Oak Haven into the next season of life and mission. We created this page to keep our church family informed and encouraged. You’ll find updates, our process, and ways you can pray and participate.
We’re committed to clarity, humility, and dependence on the Lord throughout this journey.
We love you all.
“And they prayed and said, ‘You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show us...’” – Acts 1:24
Check back to this page frequently for updates, we will regularly add more information as things develop.
We will add to this list as we receive more information and as more questions come up.
Andy has accepted a nomination for the Regional President position with our denomination, Converge North Central. This a role of pastoring the pastors of our region of Minnesota and Iowa. It involves strengthening churches, connecting pastors, and helping to plant new churches. Oak Haven will be one of the 205 churches that he will oversee, which essentially means that he will be providing spiritual and denominational support for Oak Haven and for our new lead pastor.
Yes. They are staying in their home in Andover and their kids will continue to attend Andover schools. Pastor Andy’s new role is based in the Twin Cities and will involve some travel. However, on Sundays he’ll be spending time with many churches. It is best practice for a pastor in transition to find a new church home to make way for the next pastor. We anticipate a future day when the Kumpels will be able to visit Oak Haven as our CNC Regional President and maybe even have Andy serve as a guest preacher.
Pastor Andy‘s last day at Oak Haven will be November 30 and there will be a vote in mid-December for Converge churches to affirm Andy in his new role. The Board of Stewards has already made some plans for what the interim and search process could look like and will continue to update on the timeline as more information is solidified.
We will continue our regular rhythm of sharing the Sunday teaching responsibilities amongst our entire pastoral staff. Pastors Elise and Ryan will probably preach a bit more often, and the Board of Stewards will be bringing in guest preachers and other friends of Oak Haven to bridge the gap.
It is healthy for a church to have a transition period between lead pastors; best practice is about one month for every year served, so for Pastor Andy’s 10 years that would be at least 10 months. Current church trends also indicate that a successful lead pastor search post-COVID could take around 18 months.
In line with Oak Haven’s Constitution, here’s how we are moving forward:
Interim Leadership
The Board of Stewards have designated two board members to explore interim leadership options and will be presenting their recommendations to the board at their next meeting on October 28th.
Search Team Formation
After a period of prayerful analysis and discernment, the Board of Stewards, Pastor Team and other leaders will identify direction and pastoral needs.
Oak Haven will then be launching a Pastor Search Team to help us seek and discover who God is preparing to lead Oak Haven into the future.
This team will represent the heart and diversity of our church family. We will have more information about how this team will be selected and affirmed by our congregation soon.
We’re trusting God to guide every step, and we’re confident He’s preparing someone special to join our mission. Let’s keep praying and believing—great days are ahead for Oak Haven!
Congregational Involvement
Once a candidate is identified, the church will have the opportunity to meet the person, ask questions, and participate in a formal vote.
Our goal is to walk forward in unity and listen well to the Spirit and one another.
If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to seek out a board member – they are here to serve our congregation.
Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
